Tips for Keeping Your Equipment Clean and Odor-Free: A Guide by California Mixed Martial Arts (CMMA)

Tips for Keeping Your Equipment Clean and Odor-Free

At California Mixed Martial Arts (CMMA), we understand that maintaining a clean and odor-free training environment is essential for every martial artist and fitness enthusiast. Whether you’re sweating it out in a Muay Thai class or rolling on the mat in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, your training equipment deserves the same dedication and care you give to your skills. In this blog, we’ll share effective tips on keeping your gear pristine, fresh, and ready for action!

Why Clean Equipment Matters

Training gear can accumulate sweat, bacteria, and odors, which not only affect the experience of training but can also lead to hygiene issues. Clean equipment can enhance performance and ensure that you feel comfortable and confident during your workouts. Here are some simple yet effective ways to keep your gear in top shape:

1. Regular Cleaning Routine

Establish a regular cleaning schedule for your gear. This should include:

Washing Clothing: After every training session, wash your rash guards, shorts, and other clothing in warm water to help remove sweat and bacteria. Consider using a gentle detergent that’s effective against odor, and avoid fabric softeners, which can leave residues.

Wiping Down Gear: Use wipes or antibacterial sprays to clean gloves, shin guards, and headgear after each use. Pay special attention to any areas that come in contact with skin.

2. Deep Cleaning Your Gear

Occasionally, your training equipment will need a more thorough cleaning:

Gloves and Shin Guards: If your gloves or shin guards have an unpleasant odor, fill them with a mixture of baking soda and water. Let them sit for a few hours to absorb odors, then wipe them down with a clean cloth.

Gi and Rash Guards: For your BJJ gi, soak it in a mixture of cold water and vinegar before washing to help eliminate odors. Be sure to check care labels for washing instructions.

3. Drying Equipment Properly

Drying your gear properly is critical to preventing odors:

Air Dry: After washing, hang your training clothes and gear to air dry rather than tossing them into the dryer. This will help reduce shrinkage and maintain their fit.

Avoid Damp Areas: Always store your gear in a cool, dry place. Avoid leaving wet items in gym bags, as moisture can lead to the growth of bacteria and mold.

4. Use Odor Absorbers

Incorporate natural odor absorbers into your storage routine:

Baking Soda: Small sachets of baking soda can be placed in your gym bag to help absorb moisture and odors.

Essential Oils: A few drops of essential oils (like tea tree or lavender) on a cotton ball in your bag can add a pleasant scent and have antimicrobial properties.

5. Practice Good Hygiene

In addition to cleaning your equipment, practicing good personal hygiene is vital:

Shower Before and After Training: Always shower before class to start fresh, and shower afterwards to clean off sweat and bacteria.

Use Anti-Chafing Products: Consider using anti-chafing balms on areas that may rub during training, especially in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
